Maulana Abu Mahfooz ul Karim Masoomi

Maulana Abu Mahfooz ul Karim Masoomi, distinguished religious scholar, critic, researcher, exegesist, teacher and author of a number of religious books, died on 17 June 2009 at Kolkata after protracted illness. He was a respected Urdu, Arabic and Persian author and scholar well-versed in Arabic language and literature.

Maulana Masoomi was born in Bihar Sharif in 1931 in an educated family of Maulana Mohammad Amir Hasan. He received his early education in his home town. He completed his Alimiat in 1942, Fazilat in 1943 and finished his degree in Hadith in 1945 from Madrasa Alia in Calcutta. He joined Madarsa Alia as an Assistant in 1949 and rose to became Principal of Madrasa Aalia (now a university). While serving at Madarsa Alia, he completed his B.A. and M.A. from Aligarh Muslim University with Gold Medal in 1967 and 1969 respectively.


During the same period Maulana Masoomi receive an offer to teach in Cairo's Al-Azhar University but preferred to remain in India. He was also the Chairman of West Bengal Urdu Academy and Chairman of West Bengal Waqf Board for some time. He was also a member of Darul Musannifeen, Azamgarh's managing committee and member of its magazine, Ma'arif's editorial board. His articles in Urdu and Arabic were regularly published in Urdu and Arabic magazines in India as well as foreign countries. A number of condolence meetings were held in many cities of India including Aligarh to remember him. He was also honoured with Presidential Award in 1991 as a great Arabic scholar.
