We commonly debate that Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) lacks world renowned scientists and research scholars to put AMU on a global map. Partially it is true but few names have put AMU on the global map of science & technology and one of the such name is Dr. Israr Ahmad. He was a distinguished scientist and considered an authority on Theoretical Nuclear Physics and Quantum Scattering Theory.

Professor Israr Ahmad was born on December 19, 1940, in village Mahuwara Kalan in Azamgarh. Dr. Israr Ahmed was the youngest son of Mr. Mukhtar Ahmed who had 3 sons & 1 daughter. After completing his primary education from Mahuwara Kalan Azamgarh, he joined Pushp Nagar Inter College and completed his high school and Intermediate in 1955. After this he joined Shibli National College Azamgarh. In 1959, he finished his B.Sc. securing 1st position in Gorakhpur University to which Shibli National College was affiliated at that time. After his graduation from Shibli National College Azamgarh (Gorakhpur University) in 1959; he pursued his post-graduation studies and earned M.Sc. in Physics from AMU Aligarh in 1961. He was awarded the F.D. Murad Medal for standing FRIST at the M.Sc. examinations. Even before completing his Ph.D. he was appointed Lecturer in Physics on July 16, 1961. He started his Ph.D. under supervision of Prof. Mohd. Zillur Rahman Khan but submitted it as a Teacher candidate in 1969. He was a Nuclear Theorist and worked mainly in nuclear reactions. He was promoted to the post of Reader on May 20, 1971 and later to Professor of Physics on Feb. 21, 1984. He served the department as its Chairman from 1988 to 1991. In February 1994 he went to Saudi Arabia to join King Abdul Aziz University as Professor of Physics and took premature retirement from the services of AMU w.e.f. Feb. 19, 1998. He has numerous research papers in reputed International Journals and in international conferences to his credit. A number of research scholars have been awarded M.Phil and Ph.D. under his supervision. Furthermore, he has also delivered a number of invited talks in various International and national forums.

Die-Hard Promoter of Aligarh Movement

Sir Syed had a dream to introduce the modern education to the vast majority of the community and to achieve he founded Mohammadan Anglo Oriental College in 1875. He also wanted to bring a social (cultural) reform and to achieve this he started " Tahzibul Akhlaq " in 1864. What Sir Syed dreamed and work in 19th century, Dr. Ahmad followed the footsteps of his ideal in 20th century.

Apart from his research interest in science, Dr. Ahmad was keen in spreading the message of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in his time. He was one of the strong supporter of Aligarh Movement and revived the mission of Sir Syed to promote modern education, specially science among the oriental students and seminaries. To achieve this mission, with the support with the Nobel Laureate, Dr. Abdus Salam, he established Centre for Promotion of Science (CPS) at AMU Aligarh in 1985 and was appointed as Founder Director of the center. Dr. Abdus Salam visited the center in 1989. The center played a key role to bridge the gap between the Madrasah and a modern institutions. On regular basis CPS organized several refresher courses, seminars, series of lectures for Madrasah students and seminaries. He has organized number of conferences on 'Religious Seminaries and Science Education'. He also conducted several introductory science courses for the teachers of Muslim religious seminaries. He established an independent office of CPS next to the Dept. of Physics and Dean Faculty of Science. He served CPS till 1991 and handed over the rein of CPS to his student Dr. Abdul Qayum.

Tahzibul Akhlaq

SSN_1994

In 1864 Sir Syed Ahmed Khan started "Tahzibul Akhlaq" for spreading the awareness among Muslim community about the contemporary and futuristic socio-economic and educational development. Tahzibul Akhlaq was discontinued in 1881. After exactly 100 years, one of his ardent supporter, the then Vice-Chanceloor Mr. Syed Hamid revived " Tahzibul Akhlaq " in 1981. Prof. Israr Ahmad took keen interest in " Tahzibul Akhlaq " and its promotion and was appointed its "Editor" in June 1986. He took over the rein of Tahzibul Akhlaq from Prof. Noorul Hasan Naqvi and played a key role to make " Tahzibul Akhlaq " a viable journal of its kind. He is himself a science fiction writer in Hindi, Urdu, and English and wrote several articles in different reputed journals. He served the Editor of " Tahzibul Akhlaq " till 1990 and handed over the rein to Prof. Kabir Ahmad Jaisi.

Prof. Israr Ahmad - Tahzibul Akhlaq

Dear Mr. Afzal Usmani and Mr. Ghazali Khan

I am just catching up with hundreds of emails and thought to respond on the
subject.

I totally understand your frustration. But you don't think this was a bit
more to make it such a big issue to bring into electronics media.

Without doubting the credentials and stature of (Late) Prof. Israr Ahmad,
the issue has to be dealt with a degree of fairness. I have gone through the
particular issue of Tahzibul Akhlaq which is under question and a complete
article on the life of Prof. Israr Ahmad written by Dr. Abu Sufyan Islahi
was published in the same issue. I agree that nothing was mentioned in the
editorial of the said issue. Of course Prof. Israr Ahmad deserved some space
in the editorial but when there was a complete article on his life and
contributions in the same issue, asking something more dos not make much
sense. I am aware that some of the journals including Maarif- monthly
journal of Darul Musannefin Shibli Academy gave him space on their editorial
pages but all those journals does not have a complete article on the life of
Prof. Israr Ahmad in their respective issues.

If you go by those standard, can you give me few names of reputed journals
who have published a complete editorials on their past editors at the same
time when a complete article on their life was published in the same issue.
Even the track record of Maarif is not up to the mark in this regard. Three
of its Editorial Board members and very famous scholars died in last 2 years
and except Prof. Nazir Ahmad, no one found space on the editorial page as it
was given to Prof. Israr Ahmad. Can someone explain why ? I will not wait
for an answer rather ignore it.

My personal suggestion to all the concerned, Idarah Tahzibul Akhlaq, Center
for Promotion of Science and Dept. of physics is to organise a Seminar on
the life of (Late) Prof. Israr Ahmad and publish the seminar proceedings as
a complete book. This will be a great tribute to a true scientist, Urdu
lover and passionate follower and flag bearer of Aligarh Movement in our
time.

Afzal Usmani Saheb,
Assamu Alaikum

No you are not creating fuss. Your anger and frustration is justified and I
am sure like me every member of this netowrk will agree with you. This is
sheer insensitivity and ungratefulness. There can be no other explanation.
Look at this absurd explanation given by Rahat Abrar Saheb in this clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lI08Onr8hY4. Come on PRO Saheb you are not
talking about an unknown and insignificant personality about whom poor
editorial board did not have enough information to write even a small piece!
Was there really no one in the editorial team who could pen or at least
translate Prof Israr Saheb's obituaries carried by other publications?
Really disgraceful!

Disrespect to (Late) Prof. Israr Ahmad byTahzeebul Akhlaq Team

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lI08Onr8hY4

Dear All,

I was thinking to write on the subject for sometime but did not intended to create some kind of fuss.
Somehow, it is a tradition of AMU campus and the AMU comunity in and around campus even did not respects the dead.
As I had written in my article http://aligarhmovement.com/Aligarians/Israr_Ahmad about Prof. israr Ahmad and his love and passion for Sir Syed and his Aligarh Movement. He was a true follower of Aligarh Movement and tried his best to continue the legacy of founder of AMU Aligarh. His efforts to increase the circulation of "Tahzeebul Akhlaq" and incorporated more science based articles to attract urdu speaking masses towards Science. This was one of the objective for which Sir Syed founded "Scientific Society ".

The ignorance of the present Editorial Team of Tahzibul Akhlaq is unacceptable.
Editorial of a monthly journal like Tahzibul Akhlaq should be inclusive of the major events of the month affecting our community and beloved Alma Mater and Aligarh Movement. If they have missed a person like Prof. israr Ahmad who was even Editor of the same Journal, then how we can expect about others.

The comment made by Dr. Rahat Abrar sahab, PRO AMU Aligarh in the news resport is totally unacceptable. When it took me just 2 days to write my article when Prof. Israr sb was sick, how come they could not write even an Editorial about Prof Israr Ahmad.

Now I assume same story maybe true about other legendary figures who died very recently like, Prof. Wasiur Rahman, Prof. Mukhtaruddin Arzu, Prof. Haqqi sb, Prof. Nazir Ahmad and so many others. I would like to request the AMU Administration to look into the issue and make sure, it should not be repeated again.

Sir Syed started Tahzibul Akhlaq to bring a Social reforms and used as a mouth piece to share his ideas and thoughts via it.

Tahzibul Akhlaq is not just an Urdu journal like many others. It has a mission and cause.

In last 3-4 years, Mr. Naved Masood sb and me wrote many obituaries about eminent Aligarians including retired AMU Staff members like, Prof. Mohd Shafi, Prof. Nazir Ahmad, Prof. Israr Ahmad, Prof. Mukhtaruddin Arzoo amd Prof. israr Ahmad but the comment and response from AMU community from AMU campus is almost eq to 0. I would like to request the AMU community to start writing or expressing yourself at least to honor your own colleagues otherwise you will have the same fate.

I am extending unconditional apology if I hurt anyone.

Dear Aligs
AA

It is indeed a very sad day for all of us. Prof. Israr Ahmed was family to us, Khaloo as we used to call him. In our family we were always given example of his lifestyle, his accomplishments, and his genius. I wasn't fortunate to be his student but had several opportunities to interact with him during family gatherings. Infact we were too scared to go in front of him if ever we failed to score good marks.

During my first assignment in Saudi Arabia in 2001-2002 I visited him many times during his tenure with King Saud University in Jeddah. During these visits I noticed his concerns for the community, science in general, and of course his passion for poetry. May Allah swt forgive all his sins and bless him with a place in Jannat. Aamin.

I am very sorry to hear about the demise of Prof. Israr Ahmad. Though, our family was not directly related to him, but he always considered my mother as his own sister and considered and treated us as nephews. He was more than maternal uncle (manmun) to us. He and his family helped us specially my mother in many ways which is difficult to enumerate.
Prof. Israr Ahmad like to many others was my guiding angel and would always be there for me, whenever I ran into any difficulty. I shall always have fond memories of him. I remember seeking his help, whenever I got into any difficult situations.
In my college days, he was the one who encouraged and pushed me to become a better student. One of the many qualities of Prof. Israr Ahmad was that he would rarely run out of patience. Of all the people who have influenced and guided me, the first name is that of Prof. Israr Ahmad. His demise has left me lost for words and I cannot say more.
Parting among loved ones is one rule of Allah in his creations. My eyes are tearful. My heart is full of anguish, but I will say only what pleases my Lord. Allah can give and take things easily whenever and wherever. I love my manmun and I pray that Almighty Allah will accept him and grant him jennah, and I humbly request that prayer be made for him.....!

Dr Israr Ahmad - Scholar. Aligarian.

Dr Israr Ahmad passed away. This news saddened all his admirers, who included me as well. His death might have left a void, but no death is untimely, according to Islamic belief. Some of his projects might not have been completed but then it was our misfortune that we could not benefit further from his erudition, his knowledge, his expertise. Knowledge, expertise, proficiency are unique to every single soul and they end with the end of a person, except of course when an Abu Hanifa is privileged to have an Abu Yusuf, and a Shibli is fortunate to have a Syed Sulaiman. And when a scholar is unable to transfer his treasure to someone like him in the next generation, then this is what we lament about and express sadness and sorrow at an irreparable loss when a top-ranking scholar like Dr Israr Ahmad says adieu to this temporary abode.

May Allah wrap his soul in His everlasting Mercy. Ameen. A scientist of great repute and a scholar of high caliber, he passed away peacefully on an auspicious day, Friday. That itself is a visible symbol of his acceptance in the presence of Allah.

In his later years Dr Israr Ahmad would prefer to live a secluded life where his best companions were books. A professor at the King Abdul Aziz University, he lived in Jeddah in the days when I also lived there. Yet I was not aware of his presence in the city until a coincidence brought us together. Both of us were on a consultative panel formed by Islamic Development Bank president, Dr Ahmad Muhammad Ali, to review and advise on a plan for education of Muslims of India. At the conference hall, Dr Muhammad Nejatullah Siddiqi, another delegate, came straight to me and said he would introduce me to who he called a fan of yours.

My fan? I am not a person of the stature to have fans. Who that person might be?

Within moments he appeared at the entrance. He came directly to me. He was Dr Israr Ahmad. He told me that he was a regular reader of my weekly column in the Saudi Gazette. I felt deep gratitude. It was a big honor, indeed.

In that meeting I was greatly impressed by the insight of Dr Israr Ahmad.

In those days, a small group of dedicated friends used to hold a monthly lecture series in Jeddah on issues confronting Muslims of the world. I wished Dr Israr Ahmad had addressed our group on the issue of scientific understanding and temperament. Myself and Dr Ausaf Ahmad visited him to invite to the group, but he excused because of his failing health and that he had to retire early in the night while our meetings would start only after the Isha prayers. However, in that brief meeting at his Jeddah residence, we discussed many issues and once again I gained from his knowledge and understanding of the prevailing situation. He did not have readymade answers to questions that we often ask ourselves, our peers and our seniors and find no clue as to where do we stand and where do we want to be. Nevertheless, Dr Israr Ahmad was of the opinion that our struggle at intellectual level must continue by those who have an understanding of global crosscurrents and who can analyze them with historical insight.

It was a desire like that of Rumi and Iqbal “insanum arzoost“ I crave for Man.

True. How difficult is it to distinguish The Man in the crowd where everyone is a man.

Re: Prof. Israr Ahmad is no more with us

Dear Friends,

Innalillahe Wa Inna alihe Rajeoon

May Dr. Israr Ahmad rest in peace! Thanks to Usmani saheb, I read the short
biography of Israr saheb. It jogged my memory and a pleasant young bearded
face with short locks emerged from about 45 years ago. I met him the first
time in 1962 in the office of Dr. Zillur Rahman, reader in physics at the
time. Israr saheb was a PhD student at the time and had just joined as a
lecturer in Physics. We met a few times before I left AMU, often at Dr.
Zillur Rahmanâ's house. He had a lively yet quite sense of humor, with a
playful slight smile. Hi expressed his opinions with thoughtful care.

He enjoyed poetry and had socialist bent in politics that cares for those
who needed help. From his biography, it is clear that he has left a
considerable body of work and enormous legacy of goodwill that would live
long. Our paths diverged and I did not know that he had retired in Delhi. I
wish I had met him while in Delhi. My condolences to his family.

Re: Prof. Israr Ahmad is no more with us

ASAK All,

We were all getting the news about Professor Israr Ahmad’s serious illness however we were not expected his early demise. We would make dua to Almighty allah for his maghfirat and a place in Jannatul firduas and also the strength to his family and friends to bear his loss. Prof. Israr was popularly known as ‘Newton’ among the students and I would say the name suited him very well. I don’t know how people started calling him by this name but I guess because of his hairstyle similar to Sir Issac Newton, his intellect, knowledge and understanding of Physics. Professor Israr was a very good teacher and researcher and was an asset for the Department of Physics and AMU as a whole. Whatever knowledge of quantum mechanics I have till date is only because of him. He is the one who brought Prof. Abdussalam, a Nobel Laureate in Physics, at AMU and also started exchange program of teachers and scholars of Physics Department to visit Abdussalam Center for Theoretical Physics in Italy. His loss cannot be compensated and he will be remembered till the Physics at AMU exists.

ASAK! Prof. Israr taught me during the final year of my master's. My specialization - Theoretical Nuclear Physics, was exactly where he really excelled. I was really awed by his knowledge of Quantum Mechanics. I was a classmate of his son-in-law Dr. Akhtar Alvi, who did his specialization in Solid State Electronic.

Prof. Israr is the kind of dedicated personalities that AMU needs to establish its place as the top research facility. By the way, he was instrumental in getting Prof. Abdul Salaam to visit AMU after he (Prof. A. Salaam) had won the Noble Prize.

To-date I feel proud of the fact that I was taught by him although I immediately afterwards pursued Computer Science to this day. Through this forum I have come to know that Prof. Israr has gone into coma recently. I wish him speedy recovery and a long and healthy life.
